Regional Gender Equity/Single Parent Workshops Project.
Mount San Antonio Community Coll. District, Walnut, CA.; McGillicuddy (Shirley) & Associates, Sierra Madre, CA.
The 107 California Community Colleges (CCC) are organized into 9 regions, each served by a regional Gender Equity/Single Parent Coordinator. The role of the coordinators is to improve communications and facilitate resource sharing among the colleges within their region in order to address the needs of and expand services provided to single parents and other nontraditional students. In addition, coordinators work with a task force of representatives from the region's colleges to identify in-service priorities to help vocational education personnel increase enrollment and retention of nontraditional and single parent students in vocational education. Between December 1990 and May 1991, the regional coordinators designed, promoted, conducted, and evaluated eight highly individualized workshops for vocational education instructors, administrators, counselors, and support services staff. Workshop topics included the following: recruitment of more women and single parents into vocational education programs; successful teaching strategies to promote gender equality; and defining equity. This report describes the planning and content of the workshops, and presents the results of workshop evaluations. In addition, the report reviews the roles and responsibilities of the coordinators and details the activities undertaken by the CCC in the appointment and training of coordinators. Appendixes provide a roster of colleges by region; regional coordinator meeting outcomes; regional meeting evaluations; workshop planning procedures; workshop evaluation summaries; and participant summaries.
