Documents pertaining to the legislative history of Public Law 101-336, the Americans with Disabilities Act, are compiled. The compilation begins with the text of the law (which is designed to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability) including its five titles (employment, public services, public accommodations and services operated by private entities, telecommunications, and miscellaneous provisions). The compilation also includes: (1) House of Representatives Report 101-596, the Conference Committee report; (2) Senate Report 101-116 in which the Committee on Labor and Human Resources recommend passage of the bill as amended; (3) House of Representatives Report 101-485 (Parts 1-4) in which the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, Committee on Education and Labor, Committee on the Judiciary, and Committee on Energy and Commerce recommend passage of the bill as amended, together with dissenting views; (4) selected floor debate transcripts from the Congressional Record; (5) regulations, statutes, and court cases cited in the House and Senate reports; (6) rules and regulations concerning nondiscrimination on basis of disability in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance, reprinted from the Federal Register (May 4, 1977); (7) effective dates of statutory provisions; and (8) disablity-related tax provisions related to businesses. Transcripts of six hearings pertaining to Public Law 101-336 are compiled in volume 2 dating from September 27-October 6, 1988. The hearings contain prepared statements and testimony from members of Congress; representatives of government agencies, voluntary agencies, higher education institutions, and businesses; and concerned citizens. Volume 3, is a compilation of seven hearings on Public Law 101-336 dating from August 3-September 26, 1989. The hearings contain: the text of the bill; opening statements and prepared statements from members of Congress; witnesses' testimony; and prepared statements and letters from government officials, representatives of voluntary agencies and businesses, lawyers, and others.
