This publication provides Maine school administrative unit personnel with guidelines to implement procedures for identifying gifted and talented children. Legislative requirements are presented on the left-hand pages and suggested guidelines for implementing the requirements are on the right-hand pages. Requirements and guidelines are organized into five chapters which address: (1) screening; (2) objective measurements; (3) subjective measures; (4) the arts; and (5) the selection process. Specific topics covered include: definitions; identification criteria; screening for general, specific, and artistic abilities; intelligence tests (group and individual); aptitude tests; achievement tests; alternative methods for grades K-2; student characteristics; teacher checklists; parent referral; peer referrals; self-referral; pupil products and performances; student artistic products; the selection team; placement; collaboration with the regular teacher; parent notification; the annual student program review; and review of identification.
