Canadian Association of School Administrators, Toronto (Ontario).; Shannon and McCall Consulting Ltd., Ottawa (Ontario).
Suggestions for long-term policy development to prevent the spread of the AIDS/HIV virus through promoting healthy behaviors and strengthening school-community partnerships are offered in this report. Goals of the booklet are to provide information on AIDS education in relation to recent changes in curriculum design, materials, and research; encourage the development of school district policies that utilize a comprehensive health education approach and school-community partnership; and provide guidelines for assessment and planning. The first section summarizes recent developments in curriculum goals, criteria for evaluating educational materials, and excerpts from the Canada Youth and AIDS study. The study describes sexual behaviors among youth and discusses the rationale and benefits of a school-community partnership. The second section provides assessment and planning tools for the development of comprehensive, long-term AIDS/HIV education policies. The recommendation is made for individual community development. The third section discusses the development of a school-community partnership and offers strategies for implementation. Three tables and three figures are included. (LMI)
