Promising Practices for Special Needs Youth in Career-Vocational Education. Impact Programs.
Sonoma State Univ., Rohnert Part. CA. California Inst. on Human Services.
This compilation describes self-selected programs and is a guide for ideas and possible solutions to problems for educational personnel serving special needs populations. Programs are categorized by 19 exemplary career-vocational education components. These components and the five major areas into which they are grouped are as follows: (1) program administration (strong administrative leadership and support; sufficient financial support; formative program evaluation; summative program evaluation); (2) curriculum and instruction (individualized instruction; integration of academic and vocational curricula; appropriate instructional setting; cooperative learning experience); (3) comprehensive support services (assessment of individual's interests and abilities; instructional support services; ongoing career guidance and counseling); (4) formalized articulation and support (parental involvement and support; notification of both students and parents regarding vocational opportunities; vocational educators' involvement in individual education planning; formalized transition planning; intra- and inter-agency collaboration); and (5) occupational experience opportunities, placement, and follow-up (work experience opportunities; job placement services; and follow-up of graduates and non-graduates). Each description provides the following information: program name; school site; contact person; telephone number; audience served; overall school/program setting; component description; and indication of other components under which the school/program is listed. An index lists the 30 schools/programs and the components under which each is listed. (YLB)
