Achieving National Literacy by the Year 2010: A Call to Action.
United Way of America, Alexandria, VA.
The United Way of America has issued a Call to Action that asks the United States to make the achievement of literacy a top national priority. The goal is to achieve literacy by the year 2010. The Call to Action includes a set of strategies, objectives, and actions based on United Way's community problem-solving approach. At the heart of the Call to Action is a set of three national strategies: (1) create and sustain a national policy that makes literacy a national priority; (2) expand and ensure access to and coordination of available literacy education resources, and strengthen the capacity of the nation's literacy and education systems; and (3) support, encourage, and expand a community or collaborative approach to achieving literacy. For each of these strategies, projects and policies are suggested. Long-term and short-term goals are also stated. (KC)
