Middle Georgia Technical Institute. Area Vocational/Technical Training Needs Assessment.
Middle Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission, Macon.
An assessment was made of the vocational/technical training needs of the four-county Middle Georgia area served by Middle Georgia Technical Institute. Information was obtained through surveys of area businesses and former students of the school, as well as demographic and economic studies. Some of the findings were the following: (1) the population of the area is expected to grow by about 20,000 by the year 2000; (2) the economy continues to be fairly strong and to support a strong labor market in the area; (3) new businesses and industries are locating to the area; (4) former students of Middle Georgia Tech and area employers are satisfied with the quality of training provided by the school, although some concerns remain, such as lack of modern equipment and failure of the curriculum to accommodate new technological developments; (5) graduates of the school averaged about $1,000 in income above the statewide average; (6) new standards formulated by the state will necessitate increased personnel and physical space at the school; (7) economic development activities remain important; and (8) since the school is near capacity, additional faculty and space are necessary to meet the training needs of local businesses and industry. Alternatives for expansion were proposed. (The document includes detailed analysis of needs and strengths in various program areas.) (KC)
