Washington Community Colleges Fall Quarter Report 1990.
Washington State Board for Community Coll. Education, Olympia.
A statistical overview is provided of trends in course enrollments and student characteristics in the Washington community colleges. The report examines total course enrollments; full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment in academic, vocational, and basic skills programs; state-supported FTEs by college; headcount and FTE enrollment in state-supported basic skills and developmental courses; enrollment trends in transfer and vocational programs from 1986 to 1990; on-campus FTEs by college; trends in numbers of full- and part-time faculty by college from 1986 to 1990; and percentages of full- and part-time faculty by college. With respect to student characteristics, the report reviews demographics, day/evening attendance, course area, and headcount by college and funding source. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) the Washington community college system served 98,886 FTE students in fall 1990 (a 2.2% increase from fall 1989), with 84,276 of them in state-funded courses; (2) total fall 1990 headcount enrollment was 179,886, a 1.5% increase from 1989; (3) minority students comprised 18% of the fall 1990 student population; (4) 58% of the fall 1990 students were female; (5) enrollment of the 20- to 24-year-old age cohort increased by 10% between fall 1989 and fall 1990; (6) new students in fall 1990 showed a decline for the fifth year in a row; (7) student demand for developmental studies increased; and (8) state-supported FTE's grew by 0.2% to comprise 85% of the total FTEs. Appended tables compare individual schools' state-supported courses, vocational activities, enrollments, and state- and contract-supported students. (JMC)
