Short Fiction on Film: A Relational DataBase.
May, Charles
Short Fiction on Film is a database that was created and will run on DataRelator, a relational database manager created by Bill Finzer for the California State Department of Education in 1986. DataRelator was designed for use in teaching students database management skills and to provide teachers with examples of how a database manager might be useful in the classroom to teach critical thinking skills. A small database of short stories was adapted to film as an example of how English instructors might use a relational database manager to show relationships between aspects of fiction and film. The DataRelator program has an introductory screen that describes the program, which includes "drawers in the cabinet," a feature that allows access to areas of information, and "data sheets in the drawer," that allows access to more specific information in a particular area. The drawer used in Short Fiction on Film is the "relational story drawer," and allows a search by story title. Data sheets in the drawer contain cross references with other elements, for example fiction technique or fiction genre. Instructors can create their own cabinets using DataRelator, complete with drawers and data sheets, to assist in information storage and retrieval. (DB)
