Three examples of successful integration efforts in England are presented. Springfield Junior School in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, originally comprised three separate institutions--an ordinary junior school, a special unit for children with severe learning difficulties, and a special unit for children with moderate learning difficulties. The three units began to merge in 1981, with the aim of integrating as fully as possible children with varying degrees of disability and difficulty in a way that all children benefit. The Leeds Education Authority in Leeds, West Yorkshire, established a Hearing Impaired Service to achieve total integration of deaf pupils from age 9 to post 16 and to implement a bilingual policy (sign language and English). At Kingsway College in Camden, London, integration has been evolving for 20 years to include students (ages 16 and over) with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. The three case examples describe development of special services, teaching methods, attitudinal changes, social integration, and cost effectiveness. (JDD)
