This document provides an overview of the nature of nine strategies for providing instructional support services and the advantages, disadvantages, and role of Chapter 1, Pupils with Special Education Needs (PSEN), and Pupils with Compensatory Education Needs (PCEN) funds in each. The strategies are: (1) the pull-out approach; (2) the in-class coteaching approach; (3) the pull-aside approach; (4) the high school team teaching approach; (5) preschool programs; (6) the reduced class size approach; (7) replacement (extended pull-out) projects; (8) add-on projects; and (9) the multiple-funded approach. Appendices include six structural models for conducting in-class support programs; two examples of replacement projects at the elementary school level and three at the secondary school level; examples of supplementary services for Limited-English-Proficiency (LEP) students; and sample formulae for PSEN reduced class size projects.
