This document is the report of a commission appointed by the Governor of New Jersey to examine the status of Eastern European studies in the state's public schools. The commission surveyed the state's secondary schools and found that the Eastern European region outside of Russia was given very little attention. As its main focus, the commission appraised and evaluated 17 textbooks as to their treatment of Eastern Europe. From its analysis, the commission concluded that inadequate and inaccurate coverage was given to the history and culture of Eastern Europe. The commission made 12 recommendations based on its evaluation, including the creation of state guidelines emphasizing the importance of the Eastern European region, making grants available for the development of curriculum materials and other educational resources, and providing teacher training to give sufficient attention to the history and culture of Eastern Europe.
