California's Partnership Academies, which are conducted under the sponsorship of the state and aimed at dropout prevention for at-risk high school students, combine a modified curriculum and structure with the following elements: (1) a student selection process designed to enroll students with potential, but whose past performance places them at risk of dropping out; (2) a school-within-a-school administrative structure; (3) job training in a high-demand labor market field; (4) strong support from local business; and (5) both school and district program support. The academies are supported by three-way partnerships between the local school, local business, and the State of California. Evaluation information was gathered from a telephone survey of June 1988 graduates of 8 of the 12 academies operating from 1985 through 1988. The following findings are reported: (1) fewer academy students dropped out in their senior year than students in a comparison group of regular high school students; (2) most graduates of both the academies and the regular schools are continuing their education and somewhat more academy graduates are enrolled in degree programs; (3) about two-thirds of both academy and regular school graduates are working about 30 hours per week but, among those graduates who both work and attend school, the academy graduates began with higher wages than the regular graduates and the wage difference between the two groups increased over time; and (4) both groups reported being "fairly well" satisfied with their high school preparation and achievements since graduation.
