Mathematics. Alabama Course of Study. Bulletin 1989, No. 31.
Alabama State Dept. of Education, Montgomery.
This curriculum guide prescribes the minimum course content for all mathematics programs in the public schools of the State of Alabama. It forms the basis for the development, by local education agencies, of all state mathematics programs. Minimum course content for each grade has been organized into seven content areas: number, measurement, geometry, algebra, patterns and functions, logic, and statistics and probability. Instructional objectives and student outcomes related to problem solving, the use of calculators and computers, the practice of estimation and mental arithmetic, and the development of language facility are interwoven into every grade level and/or course. Minimum course content for each grade level is presented as student outcomes which consider the developmental characteristics of learners and the developmental nature of mathematical concepts. This guide is divided into the following sections: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Trends, Issues, and Position Statements"; (3) "The Elementary Program in Mathematics"; and (4) "The Secondary Program in Mathematics." Appended are the time requirements for subject areas and study habits, homework, and student responsibilities. (KR)
