This guide describes 47 number and numeration learning activities that can be used with elementary school students. These activities have been developed using the mathematics laboratory approach. This publication is designed to serve as a stimulant to encourage teachers to open their minds and employ their imagination in developing further activities. Each activity includes the purpose, suggested grade level, needed materials, and recommended procedure. Concepts include counting, number recognition, pattern discovery, spatial relationships, arithmetic, grouping, measurement, estimation, graphing, classification, place value, commutative and associative properties, inequalities, vocabulary, geometric shapes, color discrimination, weight, practical application, fractions, time measure, and research. Appended are a categorical listing of selective manipulative materials for math lab use and a discussion of students with handicapping conditions. (KR)
