Science Instruction in Rural Mississippi, 1989 Results.
Meek, Carlysle; And Others
This paper examines data collected from 1988-1989 and identifies a number of correlated factors. The data were drawn from the "1988-1989 District and School Profile," a survey conducted and published annually by the Mississippi State Department of Education. The ACT scores used represent the aggregate scores from within a district while the other statistics represent actual reported data for each district. The "District and School Profile" contained over 200 items, but this paper considers only the following 12 areas: (1) percent of local funding; (2) size of districts; (3) percent of graduation rate; (4) ACT English usage; (5) ACT math; (6) ACT social sciences; (7) ACT natural sciences; (8) ACT composite; (9) percent of students taking college core curriculum; (10) proportion of graduates entering senior colleges; (11) proportion of graduates entering junior colleges; and (12) percent of students eligible for free lunch program. The statistical correlations of all variables are included as well as a summary of the results. Appended are the database on Mississippi education and an explanation of the statistical methodology.
