Ohio Handbook for the Identification of Children with Severe Behavior Handicaps.

This handbook is intended to assist Ohio educators in identifying students for placement in classes for individuals with severe behavior handicaps. The following topics are discussed: (1) definition of severe behavior handicapped, with examples and discussion of five characteristics and three qualifiers; (2) alternatives to referral, with examples and discussion of preventive practices for classroom, school, home, and community; (3) evaluation team activities (including the Ohio rule requirements for multifaceted evaluations, a table listing the data required and suggested sources, and a discussion of those requirements unique to identification of students with severe behavior handicaps); (4) determination of eligibility; (5) evaluation team reports required by Ohio rules; and (6) Individualized Education Plan conferences and placements, including the tasks to be performed by the conference participants and a continuum of placement options. Eleven sample checklists are provided on subjects including: intervention, intervention assistance plan, background history, behavior observation, medical information, evaluation team report, and least restrictive environment options.
