Guidelines to prevent the transmission of blood-borne diseases, especially those caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), in the school setting are provided in this resource manual for school staff. Sections include information on the reasons for the development of this manual; a summary of the means of HIV and HBV transmission; and guidelines and techniques for handwashing, using gloves, disposal of soiled materials and equipment, disease identification, cleanup procedures, and staff education. Appendices include state policy recommendations, correct hygiene and label reading procedures, AIDS Prevention Education Bylaw, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene policies, and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Standards.
