A Survey of Selected Attitudes of Principals and Assistant Principals before the 1988 Employee Strike, during the 1988 Employee Strike, toward the Collective Bargaining Process, and after the 1989 Employee/Board Contract.
Buck, Beryl; Broussard, Rolland L.
Attitudes of principals and assistant principals before, during, and after a teacher strike that occurred in mid-1988 in Louisiana's "A" parish school system are examined in this study. A second focus is on differences between principals and assistant principals in levels of experience and attitudes. Questionnaires mailed to 23 principals and 11 assistant principals in the Vermilion Parish School System yielded a 76.5 percent response rate. Findings indicate that both groups perceived labor management relations as confrontational and felt excluded from prevention management. They viewed their primary responsibility during the strike as the maintenance of school operations and reported that management training was inadequate for handling these situations. They viewed collective bargaining as beneficial in improving teacher participation, but offering no relief to the pressures of administrative decisionmaking. Levels of experience and education had no significant effect on attitudes between the two groups. Appendices include a copy of the questionnaire and demographic and attitudinal statistics.
