Procedures and findings of a recent introductory psychology textbook selection effort at 4-year liberal arts undergraduate institution are presented. The following sequential steps were taken: (1) identification of introductory texts for consideration; (2) design of an evaluation form for reviewing targeted books; and (3) collection and analysis procedures for data generated for each book. Seven faculty members and three psychology majors evaluated 34 books on 12 selected factors. Data analysis was predicated largely on stepwise regression. The five top-rated books were rated again to yield a preference that became the department's introductory text. The findings of the correlational matrix and stepwise multiple linear regression identified six specific evaluative criteria to be emphasized in future book selection: content breadth within chapters; anticipated student reactions; readability; content depth throughout; organization; and design and learning appeal.
