In 1987, a project was initiated in Thailand to develop a prototype to be used as a standard design for the construction of rural secondary schools in all areas of the country. The project had three objectives: (1) to derive architectural designs for classroom and auxiliary buildings that could be constructed within available budgets and would be suitable for the various geographical conditions; (2) to determine a suitable total school building size based on the optimal areas for classrooms and specialized rooms; and (3) to develop teamwork and brainstorming techniques between the many professionals and officials responsible for school development. Based on data from a survey of small-school administrators and regional supervisors as well as on ideas that emerged from a seminar held early in 1987 and attended by administrators, educators, architects, engineers, and budget officials, the report describes the design for the construction of small-sized schools with an accommodation capacity of up to 9 classes of students in a 3-3-3 enrollment pattern. The design was to be such that it could be constructed in three one-year phases on the basis of the fiscal year cycle and within a pre-determined cost ceiling. The resulting design is flexible; it can be used on a 1-1-1 or 2-2-2 enrollment pattern with the capability of later expansion and can be built according to the local topographical features and the construction skills of local workers. Construction of an actual prototype began in October 1988 and was completed in June 1989 in Uthai Thani. Various diagrams, sketches, and floor plans illustrate the text, and cost analyses for the different enrollment patterns are provided. Appendices include data on the schools in Thailand and a copy of the questionnaire used to assess existent school conditions and projected needs. (ALL)
