Improving Instructional Efficiency Through the Implementation of Computerized Management and Prescriptive Analysis.
Pisano, Thomas N.
A computerized management system to improve efficiency was implemented for one year in a fifth grade classroom in a large metropolitan city in the southwest. A variety of computer application software packages were reviewed and selections were made for use in grading and prescriptive analysis. The teacher also developed a database of student information including grades, attendance, work evaluation, and parental contacts. Reading groups, objective mastery, review instruction, test analysis, and objective tracking were all conducted via computer software reports. The teacher taught the 32 fifth graders keyboarding skills and how to use a word processor, using the word processor as the medium of instruction instead of a textbook. Results of the program indicate that the computerized management system was a success and the positive effects of the program were experienced not only by the teacher, but also by the students and their parents. Favorable evaluations were made from the recorded data on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in the areas of math, reading, and language arts. Appendices include correspondence; student, teacher, and parent questionnaires with tallies of the responses; lists of software and databases; grade reports; prescriptive analysis forms; and Iowa test scores.
