Principles of Governance and Administration in Higher Education.
Westmeyer, Paul
This book deals with the processes of making decisions and deciding upon how various kinds of decisions are to be made in higher education. Two background chapters introduce the text, one covering the history of governance and one outlining various administrative theories. This section also discusses the reality of how institutions operate, which is rarely based on a single theory. Part II, on principles and procedures, deals with organization plans, needed decisions, governance/administrative duties of individuals and groups, the decision-making process, the roles of faculty and students in governance, selection processes for administrators, and changing the administrative/governance structure. The final section describes the current situation in governance and administration in university systems and notes key questions to consider to recognize governance patterns in institutions. (JDD)
