Language Arts Curriculum Guide, Grades 4-6. Bulletin 1989, No. 41.
Alabama State Dept. of Education, Montgomery.
Designed to help classroom teachers implement the "Alabama Course of Study: Language Arts," this curriculum guide for grades 4-6 is in three major sections. The first section is a table of contents that lists desired student outcomes under each of the major strands mandated by the course of study (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and lists page numbers after each outcome to direct the teacher to classroom activities that address the specific outcome. The second and largest section of the guide consists of classroom activities, divided among the four strands. Each strand is subdivided into skills areas in which the specific student outcomes are placed. The activities are preceded by student outcome statements and notes for the teacher that convey information important for effectively implementing the activities. The third section is referred to as the "Original Sources and Student Outcomes" portion of the guide. It summarizes the relationship of student outcomes to the original sources from which the outcomes were taken (the Alabama Course of Study, the Stanford Achievement Tests, and the Alabama Basic Competency Tests), and will serve as a reference for local school systems that wish to trace the source of each outcome. The guide is intended to be supplemental in nature, supplementing textbook materials and complementing locally developed curriculum materials. (SR)
