The Professional Challenges for Counselors.
Garfield, Nancy J.; And Others
This document consists of the fourth section of a book written to educate and inform those in the helping professions on how to deal with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The three chapters in section 4 are devoted to special issues for counselors, issues that directly affect the caregiver. They examine professional challenges to counselors doing AIDS work. "AIDS Education and Prevention" (Nancy Garfield and Rev. James Hammond) underscores how important it is that all counselors be educators and proposes specific techniques for effective AIDS prevention and education programs. "AIDS and the Duty to Warn: Ethical and Legal Factors" (Richard Green) describes the dilemma AIDS poses and the duty to warn potential victims. It clearly and concisely provides counselors with information they need to face the difficult decisions of conscience, statutory law, and ethical guidelines. "Coping With Countertransference" (Sheila Namir and Scott Sherman) discusses countertransference from an expanded view, referring to a counselor's conscious and unconscious emotional reactions to clients and the nature of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) spectrum diseases. It examines situational and therapist factors in countertransference and gives suggestions for confronting countertransference issues and preventing burnout. (NB)
