A Guide for Tutoring Adult Literacy Students. Adult Basic Education.
Cameron, Joyce; Rabinowitz, Myrna
This guide, developed in British Columbia, is intended to help tutors teach literacy skills to adults. In nine chapters, it covers the basics of teaching reading and writing to adults, through short case histories, anecdotes, and information about adult learning. The chapters cover the following topics: (1) the joys of tutoring; (2) getting to know the student; (3) using the language experience approach; (4) helping adults learn to read; (5) helping adults learn word attack skills; (6) helping adults learn to write; (7) helping adults learn to spell; (8) setting goals, assessing progress, and planning lessons; and (9) measuring the results of tutoring. A list of mostly Canadian resources is provided, organized by tutor resources, publishers, and newspapers and magazines. (KC)
