A school situation was studied in which students of English as a Second Language (ESL) were not developing English communicative competence because ESL students were segregated from fluent English-speaking (FES) students. ESL students were having difficulties with English reading, writing, and math concepts. In response to this situation a program of communicative language teaching (CLT) was established. The program, undertaken as a practicum, had the following goals, to: (1) develop communicative language competence among ESL second graders; (2) increase social interaction between ESL and FES second grade children; and (3) develop better understanding of the English language and culture among all second graders. The program involved directed activities in the regular classroom, including lessons about food, family life, school life, art, pets, illness, games, and music, culminating with a multicultural night of songs, skits, dance, and food. The results were positive, with data analysis suggesting that a CLT program in the regular classroom contributed to both communicative competence in ESL students and social cohesiveness among all of the students.
