This report summarizes the proceedings of a Leadership Institute seminar to identify the current state of knowledge and practice in community integration for people with developmental disabilities and to recommend directions for future efforts. The Leadership Institute was organized around four work groups, covering community living, families, school, and work. The work groups synthesized current research and practice; identified priorities for research in community integration, priorities for technical assistance and training, and priorities for information dissemination; and determined key ideas to guide thinking about community integration in the future. Four themes emerged: major progress has been made in community integration; attention should be directed to achieve full integration and participation; a tremendous gap exists between the best practices and practices found in most communities; and an insufficient policy and economic base exists to support community integration efforts.
