Selected statistics on health and education in Nevada are presented, mainly for the 1988 and 1989 school years. Some facts are provided about students, teachers, and classrooms in Nevada. The total enrollment in Nevada schools in 1989 was 176,464, which represents an increase by 5% from 168,353 in 1988. Enrollment in Nevada grew at the fastest rate of any state in the nation, but increases in state financial support for education lagged behind. The number of Nevada classroom teachers showed a 12-year 4% increase to 8,699 in 1989. Teachers in Nevada were paid at about the national average. Nevada's classrooms continue to be very crowded; the student to teacher ratio in 1989 was 26 to 1. Related statistics on health and social issues in Nevada include information on: (1) substance abuse; (2) crack addicted infants and infants with fetal alcohol syndrome; (3) lost productivity costs; (4) health care costs and cost-effectiveness of alcohol and drug treatment; (5) youth suicide; (6) child abuse; and (7) teen pregnancy. Criminal repository statistics for the state are provided for: drug abuse violations; substance abuse related traffic fatalities; spousal abuse incidents; sentencing statistics for narcotics abusers; alcohol and drug related arrests; and drug abuse by clients in treatment.
