Evaluation of a Pilot Program for Computer Literacy in Grades K-8.
Still, Jacquelyn H.
Florida Journal of Educational Research, v27 n1 p43-59 Fall 1985
A curriculum guide and suggested instructional resource materials were developed for a school district program in computer literacy for kindergarten through grade 8. The program was piloted with 43 teachers in 9 elementary schools and 1 junior high school in 1984 in the Orange County (Florida) School District. A structured response questionnaire and a structured interview form obtained opinions about the program from 39 teachers. Pretests and posttests concerning computer literacy were given to 309 sixth-grade participants and 312 sixth-grade controls. A student attitude questionnaire was also completed by 328 students in grade 6. Both teachers and students were positive about the program, and students' achievement gains were satisfactory. The program was to be implemented throughout the district the following year. Recommendations for improvement before district-wide implementation were made for: (1) the curriculum guide; (2) inservice training; (3) materials; (4) implementation; (5) hardware; and (6) objectives. Seven tables contain both teacher and student response information. (SLD)
