This report describes the growth of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) education programs and identifies areas needing improvement. The purpose of the extensive survey was to provide information on the program of school human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) education efforts led by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Results revealed that CDC-led nationwide education efforts are not yet commensurate with the epidemic's potential for disaster. While two-thirds of the nation's public school districts provide formalized HIV education, it is not offered at every grade level, especially the upper grades, where the probability of sexual activity is highest. Most CDC-funded education departments do not collect from students the essential planning and monitoring information needed to set program priorities and evaluate successes. This is due to a lack of staff and difficulty in obtaining community support to collect sensitive sexual and drug-use data. Although the majority of HIV teachers did receive training, it was often insufficient, and one of five HIV teachers received no training at all. CDC provides no guidance to districts on the appropriate length of such teacher training. Recommendations are made for improving the programs.
