Impact of Admissions and Certification Exams on the Percentage of Minorities in the New Teacher Pool: A Case Study.
Gillis, M. K.
This paper discusses the supply and importance of minority teachers and predicts the effects of admissions and certification exams on the percentage of minorities in the new teacher pool. The analysis is based on the results of tests administered in one state, Texas (a teacher education program admissions test and a certification examination). The data indicate that the percentage of minorities in the new teacher pool is declining. The data support predictions that only 5 percent of the U.S. teaching force will be minorities by the year 2000 when at least one-third of the students will be minorities. (JD)
