Fall 1988 S.I.Q. (Student Information Questionnaire): A Survey of Student Attitudes and Characteristics.
Calderon, Vivian
The Student Information Questionnaire (SIQ) has been administered at the City College of San Francisco (CCSF) every two years since 1976. This report presents SIQ results for fall 1988 and includes a longitudinal analysis of SIQ data for the previous 12 years. Following a brief historical review of the use and development of the instrument, section I analyzes trends in students' sex, age, ethnicity, educational attainment at U.S. schools, foreign education, educational goal, semester completion difficulties, current occupation, and reasons for choosing CCSF. Section II presents detailed tables of results for the 1988 SIQ, based on responses from 16,316 students. After addressing various methodological issues, this section breaks down student responses to 36 questionnaire items by sex, age, ethnicity, and day/evening attendance. Reported findings include the following: (1) among day students, the goal of transfer to a four-year college was the primary reason for attending CCSF among both men (64.6%) and women (60.3%); (2) more evening students than day students were likely to indicate that they received no foreign education; and (3) among day students, more women (11.3%) than men (10.6%) anticipated difficulty with reading/writing skills. The final section of the report contains complete data tables for sex, age groups, ethnic groups, educational goals, and declared day or evening division, with data grouped for day respondents, evening respondents, and total respondents. A copy of the SIQ is included. (JMC)
