Teaching for Development: A Handbook for CCV Instructors.
Eisele, G. Richard; And Others
Designed to acquaint new instructors at the Community College of Vermont (CCV) with the workings of the college and to offer all instructors some thoughts and tips to enhance their teaching experience, this handbook presents a mix of information on theory and practice of teaching and learning and on practical administrative matters. Following introductory information on using the handbook, part I provides a brief history of CCV from its beginnings in 1968 to its present status as an established nontraditional college serving over 5,000 students a year. This section includes descriptions of CCV's mission, philosophy, degree program, faculty, and staff, and provides answers to commonly asked questions. Part II discusses teacher roles and goals, and presents a brief overview of adult learning theory and ways that instructors can facilitate student development. This section also reviews a specific approach to understanding learning styles, and discusses gender issues that are related to the teaching-learning process. Part III examines course planning strategies, describing the process of developing learning objectives, and explains how to plan assessment and evaluation approaches, determine completion requirements, and select special resources for course enhancement. The final part of the handbook provides tips for delivering effective lectures, leading discussions, using small groups, and employing various experiential learning exercises. Appendixes include a sample course description, a list of available instructor bulletins, a taxonomy of terms for use in writing course objectives, guidelines for designing a grading scheme, and samples of student and instructor evaluations.
