Library Services to Undergraduates. Final Report.
Timberlake, Pat; And Others
In June 1988, the Director of the University of Missouri-Columbia libraries appointed a five-person task force to evaluate the libraries' service to undergraduates. The task force undertook an intensive year-long study of four areas: services, collections, facilities, and cooperation with other academic units. Twenty staff members were recruited to serve on subcommittees which were charged with describing, assessing, and making recommendations in each of these areas. Most of the study focused on service provided at the Ellis Library, but service to undergraduates in the branch libraries was also appraised. A common theme of the recommendations was the need for more publicity about library services. The subcommittee advised that the libraries develop a public relations program to publicize its services and designate a staff member to coordinate and implement the program. Recommendations carried out during the period covered by the study include: the installation of professionally produced signs; the hiring of two additional full-time shelving staff members and relocation of the shelving room; discontinuation of the practice of circulating bound journals to undergraduates in an effort to make the journals more available to all; and consolidation of the oversized book collection.
