Beyond Ramps: Accessing Higher Education through Technology. A Disabilities Services Conference for Higher Education (Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 18-19, 1990).

The conference reported in this publication was funded by STAR (System of Technology to Achieve Results), a program of the Minnesota Governor's Advisory Council on Technology, under Public Law 100-407 (the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988.) The conference focused on the development and availability of technology to assist postsecondary institutions to provide services needed by students with disabilities. Following opening remarks by Rachel Wobschall, the texts of 13 papers are presented. The papers are: "The High Tech Centers for the Disabled" (Carl Brown); "Students with Disabilities: Rights and Responsibilities in Education" (Jay Brill); "'Low' Technology Assists to Higher Education" (Mary Kay Albanese); "Computer Technology at Normandale" (Tammi Anderson); "Resource Technology" (Scott Dehn); "Computer Word Processing and the Speech Synthesizer" (Richard Frederick); "The Achievement of a Dream" (Bennit Pittsley); and "State Service Panel Presentation" (Rachel Wobschall), which includes "Adaptive Technology As It Relates to Postsecondary Education" (Michael Dugan), "Telecommunications Access for Communication Impaired Persons" (William Lamson), "Transition Services" (Roger Strand), and "Vocational Rehabilitation Services Tailored to the Needs of the Individual" (Paul Bridges). The final paper in this compilation is "Planning Adaptive Computing Services in Post-Secondary Education: An Integrated Approach" (Darola Hockley). A conference agenda is provided. (JDD)
