Country Learning. A Development Worker's Guide to Supporting Unwaged Rural Learners.
National Inst. of Adult Continuing Education, Leicester (England).
This guide is intended for adult educators who work with the unemployed in rural communities in England where demographic change, job mobility, decline in rural employment and population, scattered education provision, poor facilities, and transportation problems combine to complicate the work. It is particularly designed for staff developers working with rural development workers. The material is presented in three sections: (1) rural life, including the changing picture in rural areas, community and personal development, changing ways of working in education, and the environment; (2) managing change in rural life, including collaboration and partnership, working with unemployed people, responsibility for change, personal effectiveness, and skills development for the adult educator; and (3) practicalities for adult education programs, including effective working, handling publicity, organizing an event, funding, finding out research and statistics, and contact. The guide provides a framework for setting goals, evaluating personal work plans, and planning future actions. Checklists and resource lists are provided in each section. The guide concludes with a 4-page listing of sources of useful information. (CML)
