The Meaning of Volunteerism. Volunteer Development Discussion Paper No. 2.
Martin, Miguel Angel
The word "volunteer" has a different meaning in various cultures. The ways that people from a variety of cultures perceived volunteerism offered insights into the ways that people from those cultures organized their nations and communities. In this paper, part of a series on volunteerism, the National Director of American Field Service Europe (AFSE Intercultura), a volunteer organization located in Madrid, Spain, described some ideas about the meaning of volunteerism. Among the insights identified was that an organization must be prepared to respond to the needs and goals expressed by its volunteers. (DB)
