A Learning Activity for At-Risk Second Grade Students in Substance Awareness.
Parris, Rhonda E.
This document presents an instructional unit consisting of lessons designed to heighten second graders' awareness of the dangers of substance use. It is expected that students who complete the unit will be able to differentiate safe and dangerous substances and make wise choices regarding substance use. The unit's major instructional divisions focus on: (1) safe use of substances; (2) identification of hazardous substances; (3) safety rules for dangerous substances; and (4) decision making regarding substance use. The instructional program was developed through the instructional systems design process, a systems approach model involving analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Analysis revealed that there are many learning and teaching materials that address the problem. Design activities established the unit's goals and determined prerequisites for the knowledge level and behavior skills of entering students. Internal processes of learning were related and compared to selected methods and media. Formative and summative evaluations indicated that the instruction was effective. Measures, the instructional materials package, and other related materials are appended. A total of 32 references are cited. (RH)
