The Child Care Center Integenerational Project at Northeastern Illinois University.
Lowenthal, Barbara; Egan, Rosemary W.
This document reports on the effects of an integenerational program which was conducted to involve senior citizen volunteers with preschool children in a university day care setting. The primary emphases of the project were to enhance the children's reading readiness and foster a mutually beneficial relationship between seniors and children. Project activities included senior volunteer recruitment and training sessions, an intergenerational reading project, library visit, and a senior citizens recognition party. A total of 53 children in an experimental group had weekly contact with the seniors, while 9 children in a "control" group did not. Volunteers, 21 in number, were trained in methods of reading to young children. Data were collected through pre- and post-test questionnaires and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Findings revealed overall positive effects for senior citizens, children and their parents, and teachers in the center. A total of 41 references are cited. (RH)
