A Guide to Program Review.
North Carolina State Dept. of Community Colleges, Raleigh.
In 1987, a task force was established to recommend appropriate actions to the North Carolina community college system for the regular review of curriculum instructional programs. The task force was to give particular attention to the proper roles of the colleges and the State Board of Community Colleges, the impact of regional accreditation requirements, federal vocational education evaluation requirements, and the system's best thinking on sustaining ongoing instructional improvements through review. Following the task force's development of a policy on program review, the state board funded a consortium of five colleges in 1987-88 and 1988-89 to develop, implement, and refine a variety of approaches to program review. This manual documents each of these approaches in some detail for use and modification throughout the North Carolina community college system. The seven institutions selected as models were Central Piedmont Community College, College of the Albemarle, Forsyth Technical Community College, Mayland Community College, Roanoke-Chowan Community College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and Western Piedmont Community College. These seven institutions represent a cross-section of the institutions in the North Carolina community college system. Two institutions which were not members of the consortium were included as additional models of program review. Seven appendixes include a statement of the board's policy on curriculum review, a list of contacts for program review, program review task force and consortium membership lists, and an explanation of the reporting process to the Department of Community Colleges.
