Office of Disabled Student Services.
Foulk, James B.
Since 1974, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania has provided students with disabilities the opportunity to attend a higher education institution. From a modest beginning audience of less than two dozen students, the university now provides services to nearly 300 students. Services and personnel now include over 50 full-time employees, and over 100 part-time employees. The services have allowed students with severe disabilities to attend the university, and each year the severity of disabilities present has increased. Currently, students come from eight different states, with the majority from Pennsylvania. The university has developed its facilities to the extent that it is commonly referred to as the "wheelchair campus," and is ranked among the top eight "full-service" institutions. These services include 24-hour, 7-day-a-week attendant care, a wheelchair maintenance facility, lift-equipped vans, a life skills center, disabled student athletics, rehabilitation health services, meal aides, academic aides, and an adaptive computing facility. In addition to services provided for students with disabilities, the program has also developed a number of 6-week pre-university summer programs to help orient and assess the needs of students with disabilities who plan to attend a post-secondary institution.
