Studied was the development of the school subject English in the Norwegian compulsory elementary and junior high school system, stressing the period of 1945 to 1970. Historically, the relation of educational reform to the school subject English is described with identification of the influencing forces and mediating agencies. This report is concerned with the curriculum development, change and implementation affecting the societal, the substantive, and the technical/professional domains of the school subject English. Discussed is the role of research and practice in influencing and shaping decisions concerning the development, change, and implementation. Appended are 27 references. (SI)
