Improving Minority Student Achievement: Focus on the Classroom.
Denbo, Sheryl
This training manual presents information on the relationship between the educational environment and minority student underachievement. The materials presented are designed to assist teachers in establishing positive student-teacher relationships and to create a challenging and friendly classroom climate. The training package, designed to be used by a principal or other appointed facilitator, provides a framework for a 4-month inservice training period. The first four units contain training sessions designed to provide teachers with background information on teacher expectations. Each unit includes: objectives, activities, instructions and materials for mini-lectures/discussion topics, transparencies, worksheets for small group activities, and participant information sheets. Units 5 through 10 focus on skills development through teacher self-evaluation and peer evaluation. The focus is on practice exercises, teacher self-evaluation procedures and forms, peer observation procedures, and assignments for completion by participating teachers. An extensive bibliography is included. (JD)
