Early Identification Guidelines: Suburban Model (Lucas County School District).
Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus. Div. of Educational Services.; Lucas County School District, OH.
Developed by a suburban school district, this manual provides guidelines for the early identification of gifted preschool children and describes Project Unicorn, a project to conceptualize, plan, and implement a classroom curriculum model for gifted young children. Project activities were based on Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Erik Erikson's theory of social-emotional development. The curriculum framework involves processes of exploration, further learning, building upon previous learning, and communicating in the content areas of discovery, dramatic play, texture, motor development, expressive art, block play, and communication. The six chapters of the manual concern: (1) the identification process; (2) classroom environment and curriculum design; (3) staffing and personnel; (4) parent and family involvement; (5) project dissemination and interagency coordination; and (6) program evaluation. Extensive appendices provide assessment forms, such as a survey of creative and imaginative behavior; curriculum materials, particularly for health education; parent educational and teacher in-service materials, with a checklist of traits of gifted children; and project products and other related materials.
