The Development of a Questionnaire To Survey College Students' Misconceptions about the Spread and Prevention of AIDS.
Rochlin, Joyce T.
The study developed and implemented a questionnaire to examine misconceptions related to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among 57 college students enrolled in Psychology 101 courses at Essex Community College in Maryland. The questionnaire covered etiology and epidemiology of AIDS and the personal attitudes and experiences of the respondents. Two forms of the questionnaire were developed, each containing the same number of items, type of content, and level of difficulty. Subjects were exposed to a total of three administrations of the two questionnaires. Results indicated that more misconceptions were held about how one gets AIDS than about its impact on society. Subjects believed that infected patients should pay their own treatment costs. They also indicated that they would feel very uncomfortable around someone who had AIDS. Although there were no differences as a function of test form, time of administration had a significant effect on performance. An appendix contains copies of the questionnaires. Includes 41 references. (JDD)
