From the Heart: A Career in Nursing.
Gardner, Philip D.; Lien, Sue-Wen
A sample of Michigan State University alumni, representing 10 graduating classes from 1952 to 1985, received a questionnaire that covered various aspects of their careers. Of the respondents, 144 indicated that they had worked at one point in their career as a nurse. Data from these respondents are analyzed in terms of career skills needed; effectiveness of their educational program in providing those skills; career patterns (graduate's first job, current employment, and a topology of employment patterns); and career, work, and life satisfaction. Among the findings were: (1) communication skills and work skills were rated the most important skill areas; (2) the majority of nurses have held five or fewer jobs; (3) all respondents expressed some dissatisfaction with facets of the work environment, especially with supervisors, amount of work, physical work conditions, and financial rewards; and (4) respondents were very satisfied with life outside work, family life, general level of happiness, and overall health status, but were less satisfied with amount of leisure time and level of physical activity. From the analysis, it is concluded that nurses continue to perform their jobs because of the high internal satisfaction they receive. Includes 12 references. (JDD)
