Spanish Literacy: ESL and Civics.
Los Angeles Unified School District, CA. Div. of Adult and Occupational Education.
This guide is intended for use in the development of an English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) course, and civics. The guide was produced in response to the high proportion of amnesty applicants illiterate in Spanish, their native language, and in need of instruction in ESL and civics, which are necessary for legalization. The guide consists of five sections. The first section contains a course outline for Spanish literacy, ESL, and civics, including 156 specific competencies in Spanish literacy, civics in Spanish, ESL structure, and ESL life skills. The second section offers ideas for inclusion of a unit on self-esteem and group interaction through communication. The third section consists of activities and reproducible materials for a 2-hour lesson in Spanish literacy and civics. Section four provides organizational guidelines and suggestions, including: specific planning and implementation ideas; self-esteem exercises; first-day objectives; suggestions for preventing problems, and for class organization; and a lesson format chart for 4 days of the week. The fifth section is a sample lesson plan for vocational ESL, with student and teacher activity sheets. A list of suggested materials and resources is attached.
