ESL Curriculum Guide: Materials and Methods for Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults.
Batt, Karen; And Others
This guide is designed to help volunteers and teachers use English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) materials in the Free Library of Philadelphia's Reader Development Program collection. The first part is a general overview of ESL, including a description of approaches and methods for teaching. The second part presents suggestions for successful teaching, and describes how to create a supportive atmosphere for the student, emphasizing particular areas of concern when teachers or tutors work with adult ESL students. The third part discusses ESL literacy and offers teachers specific information to help identify, work with, teach, and select materials for ESL literacy students. The fourth part addresses ESL curriculum design, describing materials and considering ways that these materials can be used for instruction with individuals and groups. Thirteen specific areas are discussed separately: conversation, coping skills, listening, reading, pronunciation, writing, idioms, grammar, pre-vocational instruction, citizenship, testing, activities, and vocabulary. Appended materials include a description of the Reader Development Program; a grid showing appropriate curriculum areas and proficiency levels for which certain instructional materials are appropriate; a bibliography of curriculum materials; and a list of publishers, with addresses.
