Dropping Out: A Preschool through High School Concern.
Merchant, Betty
Understanding why students drop out is important in developing effective dropout prevention strategies. Traditional research has focused on high school dropouts; recent interest uses a developmental approach and examines possibilities for earlier intervention. Each section of this report analyzes dropout prevention at the preschool, elementary, secondary, junior high, and high school levels. Identification of dropout characteristics, an analysis of problems unique to each level of schooling, and an overview and critique of selected programs are included in each chapter. Where relevant, problems specific to socioeconomic status, race, gender, and ethnicity are discussed. Appendices include additional information about model dropout programs and addresses of selected prevention programs. (98 references) (LMI)
